From Our Home Kitchen To Yours
In 1989, Walter Nash, Sr., and his wife, Margaret, fulfilled a lifelong dream of opening a family business. They bought a small trailer and converted it to a food truck. Together, they served up mouthwatering barbecue from the side of the road in Hughesville, Maryland. Folks from far and wide lined up to get a taste of Lefty’s famous barbecue ribs, chicken, and pork. They even served a few housemade sides dishes (baked beans, coleslaw and potato salad) that kept customers coming back for more.
Nash, better known as Lefty, grew up picking cotton in Georgia. His upbringing instilled wisdom about knowing what it takes to be successful. Every morning, stacked piles of hickory and mesquite wood behind the trailer fueled the fire for the barbecue. The smoke and aroma that poured out of the roadside kitchen was a daily testament to Lefty’s determination to serve his community with the comfort foods he grew up on.
Margaret’s dishes were always a hit at family gatherings and backyard barbecues she loved cooking and formulating new recipes. Once their business was up and running, the hard-working cook started combining spices and seasonings to create a new rib and chicken rub. When she found the right mixture, Lefty was delighted. He began using it to marinate the meat several days before cooking. He would then place the raw, not parboiled, meat onto the hickory stoked fire and cook it for more than four hours. The result was legendary.
Having come far from humble beginnings…the Nash family currently operates a full-service restaurant and catering in Waldorf, Maryland, offering premium quality barbecue meats and homestyle side dishes like fried garlic cabbage, sweet potato souffle, macaroni and cheese and so much more. The 16-ounce bag can prepare up to 4 pounds of fish or chicken, while the 3-pound bags have enough mixture for up to 12 pounds of meat or poultry. Each serving has 90 calories and 2 grams of protein and is a good source of fiber, iron, and vitamin A. For an extra kick, a spicy option of Lefty’s Mix is available, providing a bold taste and the perfect blend of onion, garlic, paprika, and Cajun creole seasoning.
